Lijiang – China 2019

July 12, 2025

Lijiang welcomed me with the soft morning sunlight, stone-paved streets, and the gentle sound of water flowing through the old town. The people here live slowly, kindly, and always carry a quiet smile. I wandered around with my camera in hand, capturing a few moments of everyday life and feeling the peaceful rhythm of this place. There’s a sense of calm in the small, simple things here nothing seems rushed.

From Lijiang, I continued my journey up to Shangri-La. The higher I went, the thinner the air became, the clearer the sky, and strangely, my mind felt lighter too. The Songzanlin Monastery appeared majestically against the backdrop of clouds and mountains, and all I wanted was to stand still for a while and breathe it in. I met kind-hearted Tibetan locals bright eyed, softly smiling, gently turning prayer beads in their hands.

I remember the evening when the whole little town gathered in the square. People danced in circles around a fire, traditional music played, warm and familiar in a way that stayed with me. I could feel the happiness in every person there.

Shangri-La made me think of one word: peace. Not the kind of silence that feels empty, but the kind that lets you breathe more gently, stops the rush inside, and makes everything feel a little simpler.

I didn’t bring back too many photos from this trip. But I returned with a different kind of souvenir: a calmer heart, a quieter mind, and a deep sense of gratitude. Grateful for having set foot in this land, for meeting such kind souls, and for being reminded that sometimes, putting the camera down is the best way to truly “capture” a moment—with the heart.
